JOHANNESBURG - Late South African actor and singer Dumi Masilela has topped the 2017's biggest Google searches in South Africa.

Google has released its annual list of top search trends, based on searches that had a high spike in traffic in 2017 as compared to 2016.

Masilela passed away in August, following a botched hijack attempt in Tembisa.

An eventful political year which saw the resignation of Robert Mugabe from presidency sees Zimbabwe coming in second.

Masilela also tops the most Googled personalities category, which features six other local and international celebrities who died this year including legendary comedian Joe Mafela, Playboy founder Hugh Hefner and Joost van der Westhuizen.

Other listed categories include recipes, "near me", questions and TV shows.
