LONDON - The disgraced celebrity publicist Max Clifford who represented former honeymoon murder suspect Shrien Dewani has died in a British hospital.

The 74-year-old collapsed in his prison cell while serving an eight-year sentence for historical sexual offences unconnected to the Dewani family or the Cape Town trial.

Max Clifford was jailed three years ago after being convicted of a number of charges relating to sexual offences.

The court heard how he promised to boost the careers of aspiring models and actresses in return for sexual favours.

However, in 2010 he was employed by the wealthy family of Dewani accused of his wife’s murder while on honeymoon in Cape Town.

Clifford helped launch a counter-offensive to what he claimed had been a smear campaign by the South African authorities.

In 2014, Shrien Dewani was cleared of any involvement in his wife’s killing.
