'Shebeens contributing to violence against women, children'

Town Two Ward Councillor Patrick Mngxunyeni says violent crime will decrease drastically if authorities clamp down on illegal drinking spots.

CAPE TOWN – A Khayelitsha councillor says an increasing number of shebeens in the Town Two community is one of the main contributors to the ongoing scourge of violence against women and children.

There are 56 taverns in the area and only three are legal.

Provincial government officials have on Monday conducted a safety walk in the area to launch 16 days of Activism for no Violence Against Women and Children.

Town Two Ward Councillor Patrick Mngxunyeni says violent crime will decrease drastically if authorities clamp down on illegal drinking spots.

“The issue at hand is that most of them are unemployed or they’ve been unemployed, and they resorted to selling alcohol in order for them to put bread on the table.”
