Mkhize: Improved education system key to better economy
ANC presidential hopeful Zweli Mkhize says the current education system needs an overhaul.
JOHANNESBURG – African National Congress (ANC) presidential hopeful Zweli Mkhize says the ailing South African economy could be changed for the better by improving the education system.
He says while the Heher Fees Commission report has been released, he believes some aspects of its recommendations should be interrogated.
He was speaking at the Young Communist League’s Progressive Blacks Academic Summit at Cosatu House in Johannesburg on Saturday.
Addressing the summit on deco-modification and the importance of education, Mkhize said the current education system needs an overhaul.
“Every time I think our basic education has got more than 95% of access, the issue really becomes quality here. How do you make sure that access is matched up with quality?”
Speaking on the sidelines of the summit, he also had something to say about rating agencies S&P Global and Moody’s announcement on ratings.
“We need to look at what we do with our economy, how do we fix the economy because that’s what’s really going to make an impact on our communities, and then, of course, downgrades will change.”
Mkhize says the ANC needs to look at ways to stabilise policies and regain investor confidence to get the country to emerge from junk status.
