CAPE TOWN - A man has been arrested for the possession of close to 2,000 units of abalone.

The City of Cape Town says the suspect hails from Simons Town near Cape Town on Saturday.

Three other suspects fled the scene when city law enforcement swooped in.

The City's Wayne Dyason said: “Diving equipment was also confiscated. The other suspects managed to evade arrest but left their vehicle behind. The various agencies that contributed to the successful operation are commended for their efforts to protect our marine resources.”

BLOODWORMS

At the same time, another Cape Town fisherman has been arrested for the possession and selling of Bloodworms.

The City's marine unit members cracked down on the fisherman in a joint operation with SANParks, SAPS and the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries officials.

The suspect was also charged with having 632 harders fish without an invoice.

The City's Wayne Dyason said: “The team observed about 16 divers into the water on a poaching mission. In very difficult conditions, the joint operational team tracked these divers until they left the water and the SANParks officials eventually managed to arrest one suspect.”
