Church ‘shocked’ after death of Vela Shembe

He recently won a five-year long court battle that decided who is the legitimate leader of the church.

JOHANNESBURG - The Shembe church says it’s still shocked by the death of its leader Vela Shembe who died at his KwaZulu-Natal home on Thursday.

He recently won a five-year long court battle that decided who is the legitimate leader of the church.

He challenged the appointment of his cousin Mduduzi Shembe, who wanted to take over as leader
following the death of his father.

Spokesperson Nkululeko Mthethwa says: “We are very shocked. We were not prepared for this. God is great. We appreciate the time we spent with him. God has taken him.”

While reports say that he died of cancer, the church says the are awaiting an autopsy report.
