[LISTEN] Why Coca-Cola's 'buddy' bottles are smaller

The 'buddy' Coke size has been reduced to 440ml and there will be no 500ml bottles on the shelves after November.

JOHANNESBURG – Priscilla Urquhart, Public Affairs and Communications Manager at Peninsula Beverages, says Coca-Cola has embarked on a journey of education and awareness around sugar consumption, and introducing portion control was important for this.

The “buddy” Coke size has been reduced to 440ml and there will be no 500ml bottles on the shelves after November as Coca-Cola says it's attempting to cut its customers’ sugar consumption.

To comments about the price of the new bottle being the same as the 500ml bottle, Urquhart says the price of the new 440ml bottles has remained unchanged because the production costs are the same.
