CAPE TOWN - This year's final assessments are off to a smooth start at the University of the Western Cape (UWC).

About 90 different papers were written this morning.

The institution is the last of the province's universities to get their final examinations underway.

UWC spokesperson Luthando Tyhalibongo said: “The first sitting of November went well this morning. We wish our students well during this examination period and we understand that this is an important period that is sometimes stressful for them. We encourage them to use our psychological services.”

Meanwhile, final exams got underway last week at the University of Cape Town amid tight security on campus, following a surge of disruptive protests.
