CAPE TOWN - An advocacy group against women and child abuse wants bail to be denied to a man accused of raping his neighbour’s five-year-old daughter in the Southern Cape.

The 36-year-old man appeared in the Thembalethu magistrates court on Tuesday.

He allegedly sexually assaulted the child in his shack more than a week ago.

Women and Men Against Child Abuse says that the five-year-old child was hospitalised after the incident.

The organisation says that the girl had to undergo an operation.

The child’s mother went searching for her after she didn't see her playing outside their home.

Police say that the mother found the accused busy dressing himself, while her daughter was naked inside his shack.

The accused will make another court appearance on 28 November for a bail application.

The organisation is calling for harsh punishment for child rapists and abusers.
