JOHANNESBURG - Police in Hillbrow will meet with leaders from The Revelation Church of God after a Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officer was assaulted by members of the congregation.

The group were filmed assaulting the cop in the street on Sunday during what is said to have been a dispute sparked by the JMPD clamping a car that had been parked illegally.

Congregants have accused the JMPD of abuse.

Hillbrow station commander Petulo Mahasha says that it’s important that they meet with the church’s leadership.

“It’s a concern. We need to sit down with the leadership and talk about this and make sure that we build a relationship between the police and members of the church.”

The City of Joburg has welcomed the arrest of a suspect in connection with the crime.

Spokesperson Luyanda Mfeka says: “We believe the attack wasn’t just an attack on the JMPD officer in question but ultimately was an attack on residents of the city and the city’s rule of law. We can’t allow these kind of criminal activities to persist.”

The officer has been discharged from hospital.

I tried to avoid commenting on this video, but I cannot. The level of lawlessness displayed in this video feels me with revulsion. When we start behaving like this then we degenerate into lawlessness. The police are what society relies on when their safety and security is threatened. For these churchgoers to behave like a group of baddies spoiling for a fight, was in bad taste. If you asked me, it stinks up to high heaven. I never what to raise Bahumile and Thulaganyo in a state of lawlessness. They are just too precious to be!
