[LISTEN] ANC to hold special national exec committee meeting this weekend
Political analyst Ebrahim Fakir says Gwede Mantashe faces a massive challenge ahead of a special national executive committee meeting this weekend.
JOHANNESBURG - Political analyst and director of programmes at the Auwal Socio-Economic Research Institute, Ebrahim Fakir, says African National Congress secretary-general Gwede Mantashe faces the challenge of having to keep factional groups together while trying to prepare for the national elective conference in December.
Mantashe has to present an organisational report ahead of the conference, and Fakir says this report will focus on the problems on the ANC and this should be difficult for him as some members may not want the truth to be reflected.
Fakir responds to reports that President Jacob Zuma may want to collapse the conference altogether.
He says Zuma would be the winner in that case because even if his preferred candidate wins the conference, the candidate may want to be seen to be doing something about alleged corruption, and Zuma does not want this.
