JOHANNESBURG - The Home Affairs Department has extended until the end of January the deadline for Zimbabweans staying in the country on a special visa to apply for new ones.

Zimbabweans have also been requested to submit supporting documents to obtain a new exemption permit.

The department announced earlier this year that the Zimbabwean special permit visas, issued in 2010, are to expire in December and that the holders would need to start applying for new documents.

Director-General Mkuseli Apleni has called for calm among Zimbabwean applicants, following long queues at the visa facilitation centres.

“There is no need to go and clog in the offices of the VFS because it’s only the applications that you do online by November 2017. You have got two months to make your appointment.”

Almost 200,000 Zimbabwean special permits were issued seven years ago for those in the country for work or study.

Apleni says of that number, about 169,000 have applied online while many others have appointments.

He has urged those who have not applied online to do so soon.
