CAPE TOWN - The State has described a Plettenberg Bay computer engineer as a paedophile with a disorder that cannot be treated.

William Beale was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment on Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to the possession of more than 18,000 child porn images.

Beale was arrested in 2015, as part of an international investigation into an online child porn ring.

Prosecutor Gerda Marx says that the convicted paedophile created and contributed to a market where the rape, abuse and even murder of children was the order of the day.

Marx has argued that without a market, the children in the images would not be subjected to sexual abuse and suffering.

Meanwhile, Joanne Barret of the non-profit organisation Women and Men against Child Abuse says they welcome the hefty sentence.

“We are so grateful to magistrate Eugenie Jacobs for actually setting such a high sentence so that it sends out a strong message to perpetrators.”

There are numerous similar cases being investigated as part of Operation Cloud 9.
