Motlanthe: SA at a turning point and needs to be united
Former President Kgalema Motlanthe has urged South Africans not to use old symbols that romanticise the past but to use their privilege to fight inequality and injustice.
Motlanthe delivered the Helen Suzman memorial lecture at the Gordon Institute of Business in Johannesburg on Tuesday night.
The former president says that South Africa is at a turning point and needs to be united to bring about positive change.
He also says those who criticise the country’s current challenges by romanticising the past oppressive regime are fuelling divisions.
Motlanthe says that just as the late anti-apartheid activist Suzman used her privilege to fight injustice, those in positions of power and privilege should follow her example.
