CAPE TOWN - Twelve firefighting vehicles are on the scene of a fire on the slopes of Sir Lowry's Pass.

The N2 highway has been closed between Sir Lowry's Pass and Botrivier due to the vegetation fire.

Access has also been restricted to Sir Lowry's Pass Village and Gordon's Bay Road.

Strong winds are fanning thick smoke from a veld fire on the slopes of Sir Lowry's Pass across the Peninsula.

Fire and Rescues' Theo Layne said: “The fire is still over an extensive area, they are containing it, they’re not under control and it's spreading along the mountain slopes. There is no immediate danger to property and people have not been evacuated as yet but we have had some evacuation of the farm animals due to the high level of smoke.”
