JOHANNESBURG - In the wake of renewed taxi violence in KwaZulu-Natal, a taxi boss has been shot and killed near Newcastle.

Police say that the 56-year-old man, who is the chairperson of the Sizwe Taxi Association, was ambushed by unknown gunmen while driving on Sunday night.

It is understood that the underlying cause of the violence is a taxi war between the Sizwe and Klipriver associations over a route in the area.

The crime comes just a week after a mass killing that claimed the lives of 11 people in Ladysmith.

The police’s Thembeka Mbele says: “It is said it was just after crossing the uMzinyathi River where a black sedan with the occupants opened fire, fatally wounding the deceased.

He sustained a head wound and chest injuries and he was certified dead on the scene.”
