JOHANNESBURG - While preliminary results from water samples in North Riding show no contamination, Joburg Water is still urging residents not to consume tap water until further notice.

Affected streets include Boundary, Aureole and Spioenkop.

Joburg Water’s Isaac Dhludhlu says that the system has been flushed with chlorine and measures have been put in place to assist affected residents.

“Then we must also advise that it’s not the entire North Riding, it’s only the affected areas. And all the affected customers have been contacted about the possible contamination. We’re providing water tanks to the affected households.”

The University of Free State’s Professor Anthony Turton says that sewer contamination is caused by the sewage and water pipes mixing.

Turton, however, says there is no need for panic.

“I just think at this point in time there’s a lot of feedback that I’m getting of people that are becoming increasingly panicky and increasingly concerned about the whole water question.

“I think it’s very important that at this point in time that we have a cool head.
