Jennifer Ferguson urged to lay criminal charges against Danny Jordaan
The former African National Congress (ANC) Member of Parliament and singer has accused Danny Jordaan of raping her 20 years ago at a Port Elizabeth hotel.
The former African National Congress (ANC) Member of Parliament and singer has accused him of raping her 20 years ago at a Port Elizabeth hotel.
Jordaan’s legal team has refuted the claims, saying he is willing to face Ferguson in a court to prove his innocence.
The Commission of Gender Equality says the two opposing testimonies can only be tested in a court of law and urges Ferguson to approach the authorities.
The Commission’s Javu Baloyi says: “We support the angle that she has taken and it’s the best in terms of justice that everyone is vindicated through the court of law.”
Baloyi says that allegations of such nature are enormous and should not be taken lightly by being ignored.
Gender based violence activist Olivia Jasriel also agrees and says it should not matter why Ferguson waited for over 20 years to come out about the alleged crime.
Jasriel urges other women who may also be victims of rape to come forth and report to relevant officials.
“Even if they come forward anonymously, but we need to start appealing to other ladies to come forward.”
It is unclear whether Ferguson would respond to Jordaan’s call to have the matter be decided by the courts.
