2 arrested for running illegal abalone processing facility

CAPE TOWN - Two men have been arrested for allegedly running an illegal abalone processing facility near Brackenfell, Cape Town.

During a joint intelligence-driven operation on Tuesday, officers confiscated abalone worth more than R5 million.

Investigators followed up on information about a suspicious vehicle and followed it to a house in River Road where they discovered the abalone processing facility.

The Hawks’ Lloyd Ramovha said: “Over 40,000 units of abalone, which comprises of wet, dried and cooked abalone, valued at over R5 million were confiscated. The suspects are expected to appear before the Kuils River Magistrates Court on Thursday to face charges related to dealing in abalone.”
