Tragedy for Stellenbosch family as dad killed in house robbery

CAPE TOWN - A man has been killed and his teenage son injured in a house robbery in Stellenbosch.

Two armed suspects broke into the house early on Tuesday morning.

No arrests have yet been made.

The police's Noloyiso Rwexana says they’re investigating.

“According to reports, at about 3am, a victim and his family were sleeping when two unidentified suspects entered the residence and attacked the victim with a knife. A 43-year-old man was stabbed and fatally wounded, while a 14-year-old boy was wounded.”

Police say items were taken from the house during the robbery.

Rwexana adds: "Cases of murder and house robbery case were opened for investigation by Stellenbosch police."

Just last week the South African Police Service released the 2016/2017 crime statistics.

National crime statistics show that murder has gone up by 1.8% while aggravated robbery increased by 6.4%.

Robberies at residential premises have increased by 7.3%.

The Institute for Security Studies says being murdered in South Africa has increased by 13% compared to five years ago.
