JOHANNESBURG - A strike could be on the cards for South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) staff following an unsuccessful meeting with representatives of the newly appointed board over no salary increases.

Union representatives will on Thursday morning apply for a strike notice at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA), which could see a national strike from Monday.

One of the unions representing half of the workforce, the Broadcasting, Electronic, Media & Allied Workers Union says that some workers have been making demands for over nine months.

The union’s Hannes du Buisson says: “That feedback was then given to staff with a 0% increase on the table and our members were fairly upset about that and they indicated they wanted to go on strike.”
