SJC: Minor crime stat decreases nothing to celebrate
Police Minister Fikile Mbalula released the 2016/2017 crime stats at Parliament on Tuesday.
CAPE TOWN - The Social Justice Coalition says that minor decreases in certain crimes are nothing to celebrate.
Reported sexual offences have shown a decrease of 4.3%, common assault dropped by 5.2% and common robbery also went down by 1.3%. Murder has, however, shown an increase of 1.8%.
The SJC's Dalli Weyers says these numbers remain a concern.
“The National Victims of Crime Survey by Statistics South Africa has indicated that there has been a marked decrease in the number of people who report sexual offences, grievous bodily harm, common assault and common robbery.”
