[LISTEN] Zuma meets with Russians over nuclear deal
Professor of Physics at the University of Johannesburg Professor Hartmut Winkler says a nuclear deal makes no sense currently in the South African context.
JOHANNESBURG - Professor of Physics at the University of Johannesburg Professor Hartmut Winkler says a nuclear deal is expensive and not necessary for South Africa right now.
Professor Winkler says Russia is pushing nuclear deals with various countries at the moment including, Zambia, Egypt and Turkey.
He says the Russians offer a loan upfront when agreeing on the deal, because this is risky, they also push for the success of one particular regime in the country of interest.
He says this explains why there are reports that a team of Russians met with President Jacob Zuma ahead of his recent Cabinet reshuffle.
