JOHANNESBURG - African National Congress (ANC) treasurer-general Zweli Mkhize says that a free and active press should be engraved in any self-respecting democracy.

Mkhize was speaking on Wednesday night at editors group South African National Editors Forum’s (Sanef) annual fundraising gala dinner in Johannesburg.

Mkhize says that press freedom should always be protected as enshrined in the Constitution.

He says that strengthened relationships between government and media is important if the country is to maintain a robust and participatory democracy.

Mkhize says that he also believes that the stability in the political leadership of the country would also go a long way in assisting embattled corporations, such as the SABC, to perform optimally.

The presidential hopeful has also welcomed the appointment of a new board at the broadcaster.
