Hawks confirm probe into massive data leak
Two Gauteng companies have accused each other of being responsible for the leak of an estimated 33 million South Africans’ personal records.
PRETORIA - The Hawks have confirmed they’re investigating the data breach of an estimated 33 million South Africans’ personal records, including full ID numbers.
An Australian security developer made the discovery this week and it’s understood the locally-based server has since been secured.
Two Gauteng companies have accused each other of being responsible for the leak.
The Hawks have assigned their cybercrime unit to lead the investigation to determine how the data breach happened and who was responsible.
The unit is collaborating with other law enforcement agencies and government departments.
The Home Affairs Department has confirmed it too is looking into the leak.
An estimated 27-gigabytes of data was uploaded to an unsecured server and has been available for as long as two years.
It’s not known who has gained unauthorised access to this sensitive information.
