JOHANNESBURG - Economic Freedom Fighters’ leader Julius Malema says Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba is personally responsible for the collapse of state-owned entities.

Malema is holding a briefing at his party's headquarters.

He says the latest South African Airways bailout is just one example of how Gigaba let National Treasury use emergency funds to help a failing parastatal.

"The capture of the National Treasury also includes attempts to redirect government workers pensions under the management of the PIC into bailing out failing state-owned companies."

Meanwhile, Malema says two newly appointed SABC board members are closely tied to President Jacob Zuma and therefore there independence is compromised.

Zuma announced the appointment of the new board on Tuesday morning, three weeks after the deadline.

Board chairperson Bongumusa Makhatini now has to consider whether he will resign as chairperson of First Lady Bongi Ngema-Zuma's foundation.

Febe Potgieter-Gqubule has been appointed as the deputy chairperson. She had previously worked as an African National Congress national executive committee member.

Malema says these two appointments are concerning.

“These two individuals are Jacob and Nkosazana Zuma’s stooges who will continue the SABC capture. Confirming that Zuma and stability are not of the same Whatsapp group. We must not be shocked if characters like Hlaudi Motsoeneng are brought back to the SABC.”
