CAPE TOWN - Public Service and Administration Minister Faith Muthambi's office says that steps have been taken to ensure the smooth running of her department after two top officials were suspended.

Muthambi has offered no reason for suspending the department's chief financial officer, Masilo Makhura, and deputy Director-General for Administration, Linda Shange, pending the outcome of a probe.

Last week, reports suggested that the minister had also threatened to suspend her Director-General Mashwahle Diphofa.

The Sunday Times reported on Sunday that Muthambi and her DG have since agreed to ask the Public Service Commission to mediate.

Muthambi's office says that the suspensions are precautionary measures that in no way constitute a judgment against the two officials.

The ministry has given no details about why they've been suspended, saying that the process is a confidential labour issue.
