USAf concerned about student reaction to university fee hikes
Universities South Africa (USAf) says that several institutions have already started discussions about budget increases for next year.
JOHANNESBURG - The organisation representing the universities of South Africa, USAf, says that it is concerned about the possibility of student protests due to fee increases.
USAf says that several institutions have already started discussions about budget increases for next year which could be around 8%.
The organisation says whether President Jacob Zuma makes the fees commission report public or not, universities will still have to increase fees for the 2018 academic year.
Spokesperson Professor Ahmed Bawa says that it could be disastrous.
“If we don’t have an outcome by the beginning of next year, it could be disastrous. If there’s no clarity on how we’re going to manage the fee situation … there has to be clarity by next year.”
