Motshekga: Too early to say whether Mkhwebane complaints have merit
The Democratic Alliance says that Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane should be suspended pending an inquiry into her fitness to hold office.
The committee has come under fire from Luthuli House and African National Congress (ANC) chief whip Jackson Mthembu for agreeing to hold an inquiry into Busisiwe Mkhwebane’s fitness to hold office.
But Motshekga says that the committee has only decided that it is the appropriate forum to deal with the matter, and this does not mean it's in agreement with the concerns raised.
The DA says that Mkhwebane should be suspended pending the inquiry.
This is provided for in the Constitution when proceedings to dismiss a Public Protector get underway.
But the ANC has slammed plans for an inquiry saying it's a witch-hunt and a frivolous publicity stunt.
Motshekga said: “There’s no question of disagreement because they appear to have dealt with the merits, or demerits of the content. We have not reached that stage.”
He could not say when the committee will take the next step in dealing with the matter.
