JOHANNESBURG – Midvaal Mayor Bongani Baloyi says that nothing has changed for residents of the Sicelo informal settlement following a meeting with Gauteng Human Settlements MEC Paul Mashatile to end demonstrations.

The R59 highway reopened last week after four months of protests on the busy road in Meyerton in which a man was killed.

A deep trench which was dug by protesters has now been fixed.

Baloyi says that he hopes Mashatile will make good on all his promises to the community regarding houses and land.

“All that we received from the MEC is an updated progress report on the relevant projects which the community is expecting which will resolve the housing crisis in Sicelo.

“The bill for the repair work I don’t know because it was done by the contractor appointed by our department responsible for the roads.”
