CAPE TOWN - The Democratic Alliance (DA) has written to Public Service and Administration Minister Faith Muthambi, asking her to explain why she’s reportedly taken steps to suspend three senior officials.

According to media reports, Muthambi has served her director-general, chief financial officer and a deputy-director general for administration with notices of suspension.

She’s asked them to give reasons why they should not be suspended by Friday.

Muthambi’s spokesperson Pfarelo Maduguma says it’s against the department’s policy to discuss employment issues in public.

Maduguma has neither confirmed nor denied the minister’s move to suspend the three officials.

But African National Congress Member of Parliament Mina Lesoma, the acting chairperson of the committee responsible for oversight of Muthambi’s department, says the minister informed her that she had sent a letter to Director-General Mashwahle Diphofa.

Lesoma is unclear about the contents of the letter.

DA MP Desiree van der Walt, also a member of the committee, says she wants answers.

“What were the processes followed to suspend all three of these officials? What were the reasons for suspension?”

Media reports suggest the minister decided to suspend the trio because they don’t agree with her vision for the department and because of their tough stance on fiscal control.
