[FACT CHECK] Did tennis ball-size hail stones fall in Gauteng?
EWN takes a closer look at an image circulated on social media showing hailstones as big as tennis balls after storms hit Gauteng on Monday.
JOHANNESBURG - There is no disputing the fact that Monday's severe thunder- and hail storms caused major damage across Gauteng, including injuries and at least one death when a roof collapsed in Krugersdorp.
But is an image depicting tennis-ball size hailstones really from Monday's storms? And is it even from South Africa?
A Twitter user shared the image, to which Gauteng Weather responded, saying that it was an old picture and not from South Africa.
Many did sir... that’s what hit our town pic.twitter.com/oR3iKGBTGv— anita machos moolman (@anitamachos) October 9, 2017
So Eyewitness News did a reverse image search, which revealed that the picture first surfaced on 26 March 2013 after hail storms hit Central Mississippi in the United States.
