JOHANNESBURG/CAPE TOWN - Johannesburg metro police say they arrested 195 motorists for drunk driving over the weekend.

Those arrested were taken in for blood tests and all were given bail ranging from R1,000 to R2,000 each.

Spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said: “Motorists should be aware that over the weekend there will be operations where there is a possibility of anyone who has consumed alcohol to be arrested. But because we’re approaching the festive season and we’re on Transport Month, there will be roadblocks.”

60 ARRESTS IN CT

The City of Cape Town's Law Enforcement and Traffic officials have made more than 60 arrests over the past week.

The crimes range from drunk driving to the possession of illegal firearms, ammunition and drugs.

The illegal firearm arrests were made in the gang-stricken areas of Manenberg, Hanover Park and Hazeldene.

A Hard Livings gang member was also nabbed in Manenberg after he was caught with illegal ammunition.

The City's JP Smith said: “There are a number of guns on our streets and these confiscations are but the tip of the iceberg. People complain daily, and rightly so, about the violence gripping some of our communities. And it’s extremely disturbing that there were two incidents over the past week where residents turned on enforcement agencies.”

Meanwhile, three police officers who were wounded during a shooting in Hanover Park at the weekend are recovering in hospital. At the time, the trio had responded to a shooting in which two residents were killed.
