Maimane: De Lille, Smith special leave was necessary
The DA announced on Tuesday that Patricia de Lille and JP Smith had been placed on special leave from party activities in the metro.
CAPE TOWN – Democratic Alliance (DA) leader Mmusi Maimane says the placement on special leave of two senior leaders in the party was necessary to ensure accountability.
Maimane was speaking on the sidelines of the Johannesburg Indaba in Sandton earlier on Wednesday.
On Tuesday, the party announced that Cape Town Mayor Patricia de Lille and a member of her executive JP Smith had been placed on special leave from DA activities in the Cape metro.
The relationship between the two escalated this week when de Lille accused Smith of making malicious and defamatory remarks against her.
Maimane says he had to take the tough action against the two leaders.
“It was necessary. In the DA, accountability affects us all.”
