JOHANNESBURG – Reeva Steenkamp's family has reacted with horror to a trailer showing scenes from the upcoming movie on their daughter's murder at the hands of former olympian Oscar Pistorius.

American-based Lifetime Films released the trailer for Oscar Pistorius: Blade Runner Killer on Sunday and it has been met with mixed reaction.

The movie tells the story of Pistorius, Steenkamp, their relationship, the events of Valentine's Day 2013 and the athlete's trial.

He is currently serving a six-year jail term in a case that has been marred by appeal after appeal.

South African-born Andreas Damm plays Pistorius while German model Toni Garrn fulfills the character of Steenkamp.

On Monday afternoon, the Steenkamp family released a statement saying they did not endorse the movie.

The Steenkamp statement reads: “They are horrified and upset to read a report that 'the movie is told from Steenkamp and her mother's perspective'. June Steenkamp was not approached by Lifetime to participate, comment or be part of the making of the film, and did not give the producers any assistance. Any impression that is created that this is June’s view, or that the movie is endorsed by the Steenkamp family, is untrue and incorrect.”

South Africans have raised quite a number of issues – both good and bad - with the movie since its trailer was published.

Some of the criticisms raised include the fact that a South African story is being told by an American agency, the ‘horrible title’ and how the Steenkamps were not even part of the movie.

However, some feel the main reason why a division of a US satellite TV network has produced the movie is because local producers and writers hardly jump at the opportunity to tell their own stories and are even faced with funding problems.

A release date for South Africa is yet to be confirmed but the film will premiere in the US on 11 November.

Meanwhile, The Supreme Court in Bloemfontein has set down one day in early November to hear the state's appeal of convicted murderer’s sentence.
