JOHANNESBURG – The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) is urging motorists to avoid paying window washers, specifically those who stand at the M1 Empire Road off-ramp.

The department says the number of window washers in that area has doubled to eight in the last two months.

The JMPD says motorists who give the washers money compromise the safety of other motorists by attracting more washers to those intersections.

The JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minaar says, “We want to appeal to motorists not to give them any money because that’s why they’re there.

“They’re taking money from the motorists and that’s encouraging them to go back and if you don’t give them money, they then harass people.”
