CAPE TOWN - Gangsters are reportedly threatening a Bonteheuwel family whose six-year-old child was allegedly raped by their landlord.

It’s understood gangsters want the charges dropped against the man, aged 53, who appeared in the Bishop Lavis Magistrates Court on Thursday.

He's believed to have raped the girl in August.

Bonteheuwel ward councillor Angus Mckenzie says they won't allow the victim’s family to be intimidated.

“I’ve heard the mom and dad have been threatened by gangsters to drop charges against the accused. I think it’s very important that they know the community is supporting them.”

Mckenzie says they'll continue to support the family for the duration of the criminal case.

The matter was postponed 20 October for further investigation.

The accused will remain in custody.
