CAPE TOWN - A Lwandle resident has described how he jumped over the fence at Nomzamo High School after witnessing a helicopter crash on the school grounds.

The helicopter pilot is confirmed to have died.

He was the only occupant in the aircraft when it crashed on the field on Thursday afternoon.

A Lwandle resident who lives meters from Nomzamo High School says that he saw the helicopter circling in the sky and realised that something was wrong.

The man says that he then jumped over the fence and ran to try and help the pilot but it was too late.

The visibly shaken eyewitness says that emergency crews arrived on scene shortly thereafter.

Other witnesses describe have how the crash unfolded.

“I think it hit an electrical power line and then we saw a flash. And as we drove past there, literally there is just a pile of rubble.

“It turned and did a 45-degree nosedive across the road and hit the group on the left-hand side and exploded,” another witness said.

Paramedics say that the pilot sustained multiple injuries and died on scene.
