JOHANNESBURG - The City of Johannesburg says that the African National Congress (ANC) should have considered alternative options to table a motion of no confidence in the mayor and Speaker.

The ANC’s application in the motion against Mayor Herman Mashaba and Speaker Vasco da Gama was on Tuesday struck off the roll for lack of urgency.

The Democratic Alliance’s Tony-Taverna Turisan says: “It could’ve asked for an amendment to its rules, which must also be stated that these are rules that were passed by the ANC in 2016 when they were still the government for the City of Johannesburg.”

He says that the ANC still has an opportunity to table the motion but not by way of secret ballot.

“Should the ANC wish to table the motion of no confidence again, they can do so within the prescribed timeframe and that will be heard in November. It’s also evident that there’s no provision for a secret ballot in the City of Johannesburg.”
