[LISTEN] School violence a reflection of ‘society in crisis’

DG in the Department of Basic Education says that schools are the microcosm of civil society and recent incidents of ill-discipline are a reflection of society.

Stephen Grootes speaks to Director-General in the Department of Basic Education, Mathanzima Mweli, who says schools are the microcosm of civil society and reflect the values that it aspires to and what is seen in schools today is a reflection of society.

Mweli says parents have an important role to play, adding that they have found that some incidents of ill-discipline stem from parents not participating in the raising of their own children.

Grootes also speaks about the role of smartphones, from which most incidents of violence are captured, in classrooms.
