CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Education Department says it's seen high levels of absenteeism at schools in Thembalethu in George.

Violent protests erupted in the community this week after authorities demolished illegally erected shacks.

Five schools in the area have been affected, while exams and assessments are underway.

Education MEC Spokesperson Jessica Shelver says some educators have also been unable to access schools due to blocked roads.

Shelver adds there've also been arson attacks at the construction site of the new Thembalethu Secondary School.

“Our Department of Transport and Public Works has confirmed that the site offices were completely destroyed by the fire. This includes all site administration documents, computers and the camera equipment, in addition, vehicles and machines were vandalised and the materials were stolen. Security personnel were chased away.”
