CAPE TOWN - The Health Department says that it is ready to appoint someone to head National Health Insurance.

Director-general Precious Matsoso has informed Parliament's portfolio committee on Thursday that the advertisement for the post has been prepared.

But a funding model to support government's controversial free health service plan, remains a sticking point.

With the final white paper on the NHI gazetted in June, the next step is drafting a bill for approval by Parliament.

This was supposed to have been completed already, but Matsoso says that a draft law is only likely to be tabled to Cabinet next year.

A funding model for the NHI remains unclear.

“Granting is not a suitable vehicle for kickstarting the NHI. Treasury can advise on how we can better address this.”

She says that the socio-economic impact of the NHI must also be determined.
