'People are trying to discredit the Public Protector'

The Reserve Bank is accusing the Public Protector of colluding with the Presidency and the State Security Agency to attack the central bank.

PRETORIA - Advocate Busisiwe Mkhwebane's office says that accusations that she conspired with the Presidency to have the mandate of the Reserve Bank changed is an attempt to undermine her office and divert her from the issues she’s currently dealing with.

The Reserve Bank is accusing the Public Protector of colluding with the Presidency and the State Security Agency to attack the central bank.

Records show the advocate failed to disclose a meeting with President Jacob Zuma's advisors in her final report and discussed the Reserve's Bank's vulnerabilities with the State Security Agency.

Mkhwebane's spokesperson Cleopatra Mosana says people are trying to discredit the Public Protector.

“I don’t think we should spend a lot of time on the notes because it’s another diversion. It is wrong to create the impression that the notes attached are the notes authored by Advocate Mkhwebane. I think this is a diversion tactic used by those people who want to discredit the Public Protector.”

While Mkhwebane has defended her conduct in the CIEX report investigation, the DA says it will initiate proceedings to have her removed.

Mkhwebane says that there is nothing wrong with her calling upon any person during an investigation to provide clarity on any issue.

She says that she met with the Presidency at their request and spoke to the State Security Agency to follow up on information.

The advocate says that she’s addressed all the Reserve Bank’s concerns when she filed her own affidavit.

Meanwhile, the DA says the fact Mkhwebane consulted with President Zuma’s advisors 12 days before the release of the report casts serious doubt over her independence.

The DA wants this matter raised at the relevant parliamentary portfolio committee and for removal proceedings to be initiated urgently.
