JOHANNESBURG - Uber says its partner drivers have applied for operating licences but they've not been issued due to backlogs at the Transport Department.

Transport Minister Joe Masangwanyi issued a warning to e-hailing cab providers without licences saying their vehicles would be impounded.

The licence outlines the specific route or radius that taxis can operate in.

Metered taxi drivers argue that Uber vehicles are flooding the Johannesburg market, leading to violence.

Uber's General Manager Jonathan Ayache said: “There are operators that have been waiting over a year for these operating licences. And we cannot stop them from earning a living and putting food on the table for their loved ones. So all operators have shown us that they have applied and they have their receipt. And we are working with the department to try and speed things up.”
