ANC in JHB wants Mashaba disciplined
The ANC in Johannesburg says it's referring Mayor Herman Mashaba to the ethics committee over a statement he sent out about the upcoming motion of no confidence in him.
JOHANNESBURG - The African National Congress (ANC) in Johannesburg says it's referring Mayor Herman Mashaba to the ethics committee for disciplinary action over a statement he sent out about the upcoming motion of no confidence in him.
It emerged on Thursday morning that the ruling party has called for the motion against both Mashaba and the city’s speaker, Vasco da Gama.
The mayor has reacted in a statement, saying after only 13 months in office the move should be dismissed as the antics of a desperate party trying to come to terms with its new role in opposition.
But the ANC argues the statement goes against the rules of the council, which states that documents must remain embargoed until they are deliberated on.
The ANC’s Jolidee Matongo said: “It’s quite unfortunate that the news of a motion of no confidence is already in the media through Mashaba. This is against the very rules of council. Mayor Mashaba has failed to lead the city in a manner that ensures that the expectations of the residents are met.”
The motion will be held later this month.
