JOHANNESBURG - Orlando Pirates defender Happy Jele is expected to appear in the Randburg magistrates court on Tuesday for reckless driving.

Jele was travelling at 223km/h in a 120km/h zone on the M1 near Sandton when he was arrested on Monday.

He was released on bail of R1,000 and faces charges of reckless and negligent driving.

The police’s Mavela Masondo says: "It’s alleged that he was driving on the M1 near Sandton at the speed of 223km/h. The suspect was released after paying the bail fee."

The Gauteng Community Safety Department has also condemned Jele’s conduct.

Spokesperson Busaphi Nxumalo says: "The MEC of Community Safety has expressed disappointment at Jele’s driving behaviour and conduct. Professional players are supposed to be role models and safety ambassadors.

"The law enforcement agencies will not tolerate unlawfulness, especially on Gauteng roads following the high rate of reported fatalities."
