CAPE TOWN - A no-show by Water and Environmental Affairs Minister Edna Molewa at a third consecutive meeting of Parliament’s portfolio committee, has caused outrage.

Molewa was due to discuss irregular and wasteful expenditure at the South African Weather Service related to the premature termination of the contract of the former chief executive.

The committee also lambasted the board for also failing to pitch.

Half an hour before Tuesday’s meeting was due to start, Molewa sent through her apology.

She needed to be at the hospital where a nephew she raised was undergoing surgery for a gunshot wound.

Committee chairperson Philemon Mapulane said: “We have a lot of empathy for what the minister is going through.

We are not being unreasonable. But normally these type of things you anticipate and you indicate well in advance.”

Molewa has been insistent that she wants to attend the committee to explain why the former chief executive was paid her salary for nine months even though her services were terminated.

While the board chairperson was present at the meeting, Mapulane insisted the committee wanted to see them all.

In a letter to the committee, the board said it wouldn’t be feasible for them all to attend, and the request clashed with other scheduled meetings.
