JOHANNESBURG - Emergency services are trying to extinguish a blaze raging underground in tunnels where cables were stolen in the Johannesburg CBD.

Criminals set fire to cables underground on Sunday in a bid to trip power supply and steal copper.

Technicians went underground on Tuesday morning to assess the damage and found the fire was still raging.

The city of Johannesburg's Sol Masolo said: “We’ll only get back after the emergency teams have finished putting out the power. It’s going to delay the repair processes, for now, the issue is that we’ve had to leave the tunnels and make space for the emergency guys to go in and put out the fire.”
