CAPE TOWN - Anti-gun lobby group Gun Free South Africa says the entire chain of firearms control management must be reviewed if authorities are serious about preventing guns moving from the legal system into the illegal market.

Gun Free SA’s Adele Kirsten delivered a presentation before the police portfolio committee in Parliament earlier on Friday.

Kirsten has stressed the importance of the destruction of confiscated and illegal weapons to reduce the risk of diversion.

“The nature of firearms is that there’s opportunity for corruption, all the time. So, at the moment there are no clear guidelines on when you confiscate a gun what it's point of recovery or confiscation is to the point of it getting destroyed.

“It’s unclear, we need national instructions. So, when you recover a gun; A, B, C… this is what you must do.”
