Zille: WC needs more money to offset drought impact
Western Cape Premier Helen Zille will give a progress report on Thursday on efforts to address water shortages in several parts of the province.
CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Premier Helen Zille says much more money is needed to offset the impact of the drought.
She’s to give a progress report on Thursday on efforts to address water shortages in several parts of the province.
“We have a plan, not only in the City of Cape Town but across the province to desalinate water. In fact, we already have two active desalination plants and we’ll have a whole lot more coming up.”
This week, it was officially announced more than R70 million has been given to the province from the national government to help with drought relief measures. Much of the money will go towards helping farmers.
The provincial government’s standing committee on agriculture has warned that should there be a 10% drop in production in the sector, as many as 17,000 jobs could be lost.
